A test match at Eden Gardens: a quarter century ago

The immigration officer at the airport Dam Dam (Calcutta) looked a little too thoughtful for the New Year's Day. Although the weather was unusually dark for this time of year. As we left Dhaka last hour or so, we saw all the clouds in the sky. The weather has worsened during our short flight. Frequent hit made my first trip airplane ever feel like a nightmare. As we landed in Calcutta, we were greeted by a light drizzle. It was very light, certainly, but it was enough to make us feel at ease in an unfamiliar environment. More importantly (at least from the point of the immigration officer of view), the light drizzle combined with low light was sufficient to postpone the game after only eight overs at the Eden Gardens. This was the second day of the third test (a series of five tests) between India and hosts England. Soon the drizzle became heavier, ending any remote chance of resumption of play for the day.

Of course, the young officer was not the only upset so little play. England captain David Gower seemed extremely reluctant to off the field. In fact, if someone was happy to see the dark clouds hovering around the sky on New Year's Day, he was the captain of England. He came to India after a disastrous summer, when his side was "whitewashed" by the Windies 5-0 powerful. A poor performance in the draw to the Lord against the SL, the boys of the new Cricket World followed. And here in India, they were fairly predictable, well beaten on the first test series in Mumbai. After struggling hard to cope with the pace of Marshall and Garner all summer, the English batsmen miserably failed against the leg spin of young Laxman Shivaramakrishnan. The leg spinner of Tamil Nadu has taken 12 wickets to ensure that the brave Gatting in the second innings hundred went in vain. Already, there have been discussions of another "White -wash '. However, the British fought back brilliantly to win the second Test in Delhi.

Here in Caclutta, they did well the first day to restrict India to 168 / 4, 3 wickets fell for the left arm spin of Phil Edmonds. This could give the false impression that the ball was turning square, in fact it was a mixture of good bowling reflected mixed with cotton wool is not so good that led to England to take the initiative. Both Vengsarkar (48) and Amarnath (42) was thrown together after watching. At the end of the game, debutant Azharuddin (13 *) was at the wicket with Ravi Shastri in the form of (26 *).

In the second morning, the perfect conditions for seam bowling looked, Gower has used his fast bowlers Cowans and Ellison. Specifically, Ellison, Kent was ideal for such a condition. Despite his impressive debut in the summer, the Ring, he was considered a gamble for 'Le Passage to India ", mainly because Indian conditions are never suitable for swing bowling. But Ellison upset well to take four wickets in the first innings in Delhi, and here, although it was wicket-less on the first day, he looked ominous in the second morning, fighting in the prodigious two directions. Ravi Shastri and both Azharuddin played and missed on numerous occasions.

So it was not a very familiar experience for Ravi, after visiting NZ and England before it was a new experience for the rookie Azza. Consistent performance in domestic cricket in India for a number of years, he also impressed on the tour of Zimbabwe with the India U-25 side (led by Ravi Shastri), season 83 - 84. Here he got his chance after the technical Sandip Patil against short bowling seemed highly suspect in the previous two test matches. Ironically, Azharuddin own technique against the short stuff is repeatedly questioned by experts during his long and eventful career. But here, on this dark day in January, he faced some short bowling. Instead, the England bowlers acute th.
