Video Transcript: Here I am in my hotel room fabulously decorated Havana and I want to talk about money. The money in Cuba. Pesos. Cuba has two currencies, the Cuban peso and the convertible peso. The Cuban peso is generally used by locals and tourists are stuck with the convertible peso, which is about 25 times the value of the Cuban peso. They are very similar. So be sure to check that you get told convertible peso, because there are scams.
Now is the Cuban convertible peso. One. I traveled a lot and you do not see too many principalities of three. Tres pesos. They also come in five years and tens. And just to make things confusing, one comes into a room and a note, but you typically use the note. There are also small coins, but given how Cuba is expensive, you probably will not be using coins too often. This is worth about U.S. $ 1.20. It does not give you too many Cuba. It is not like other Central American countries where you come to think that you will have nice cheap holiday. Cuba is a very expensive place to come. The only things are cheap cigarettes and alcohol.
When you come to Cuba, make sure you go to the exchange or CADECA at the airport. There are two of them. The lines are always long, but it is by far the best place to change money. Do not come to think of Cuba, you can move on the USD. They are not accepted, despite what people tell you. It was abolished in 2004 and no one will take them.
The best currency to come to Cuba with the euro or the pound, and then you can just change them at the airport. Australian dollars are not accepted. So either put some dollars or try to get some euros.
